BASICS OF MECHANISMS

Basic Terminology - Kinematic links, Pairs, joints, Structures, Machines, Degree of freedom, Grubler&Kutzbach Criterion– Mechanism –Mobility of mechanism. Simple mechanisms - Four bar, Single slider crank chain and Double slider crank chain mechanism and their inversions. Intermittent Motion Mechanisms - Mechanisms & linkages - real time applications. Mechanical advantage - Transmission Angle.

ANALYSIS OF MECHANISMS

Construction of velocity and acceleration diagram by graphical method (Relative Velocity Method), Four bar mechanism, slider crank mechanisms and complex mechanism. Synthesis of mechanism – Classification of synthesis - Introduction to commercial software packages for the development of kinematic models.

KINEMATICS OF CAM AND GEARS

Introduction - terminology, classifications, types of follower motion - Uniform Velocity Motion, Simple Harmonic Motion, Uniform Acceleration and Retardation Motion - Construction of cam profile - Knife edge follower, Roller and flat faced follower. Theory of Gearing – gear nomenclature – law of gearing – tooth forms – minimum number teeth – length of arc of contact – velocity and torque calculation- contact ratio and interference. Gear trains: types –- Parallel axis and epicyclic gear trains.

FORCE ANALYSIS AND BALANCING OF MASSES

Force Analysis: Static Force Analysis, Free body diagrams, conditions of two, three and four Force members. Inertia forces and D’Alembert’s principle–Inertia force Analysis in Reciprocating Engines –Crank shaft Torque. Fly wheels–turning moment diagrams and fluctuation of energy of reciprocating engine mechanisms, coefficient of fluctuation of energy and speed, weight of flywheel required Balancing- need of balancing, concept of static and dynamic balancing, balancing of rotating mass by another mass in the same plane, Forces due to revolving masses.

FREE & FORCED VIBRATION AND CONTROL MECHANISMS

Free Vibration: Basic features of vibratory systems–types–Single degree of freedom system–Transverse vibration of beams–Natural frequency by energy method, Dunkerly’s Method-Critical speed-damped free vibration of single degree freedom system-Types of damping–free vibration with viscous damping, critically damped system, under damped system. Torsional systems: Natural frequency of two and three rotor systems. Forced Vibration: Response to periodic force–Harmonic Force–Force caused by unbalance–Support Motion-Logarithmic decrement-magnification factor–Vibration isolation and transmissibility – Modal Analysis in Vibration. Governors - Types - Centrifugal governors - Gravity controlled and spring-controlled governors –Characteristics - Effect of friction - Controlling Force. Gyroscopes – Gyroscopic forces and torques- Gyroscopic couple - Gyroscopic stabilization - Gyroscopic effects in Automobiles, ships and airplanes.
